I am so excited to share this news! My friend Felix has been waiting for several years for his finds to be officially named and accepted and that day has finally arrived! The Coenobita family welcomes FOUR new members: Coenobita moluccensis, Coenobita patsyae (named for Patsy McLaughlin <3 ), Coenobita celebensis, and Coenobita granularis.
I will soon begin working to add these four new species to the website as well as updating my book, The Complete Guide to Land Hermit Crabs and Their Care: Changing the Mindset of Hermit Crab Keeping
This scientific paper details the discovery of four new species and one new record of land hermit crabs (genus Coenobita) from Indonesia, utilizing integrative taxonomy, which combines physical characteristics and genetic data (specifically, mitochondrial 16S rDNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I). The study provides detailed descriptions and comparisons of these new species, highlighting subtle morphological differences and genetic divergences that distinguish them from known species. Indonesia is identified as having the highest diversity of Coenobita species globally, bringing the total number found there to thirteen, and suggests further research is needed to fully understand the biodiversity of this genus in the region.
